The UConn product made the NBA All-Rookie first team and finished third in Rookie of the Year voting. His 8,562 points in a Grizzlies uniform rank fifth on the franchise's all-time leaderboard.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Gay also made stops with the Toronto Raptors, Sacramento Kings, San Antonio Spurs, and Utah Jazz. He checked in four minutes into the second quarter alongside LeBron James to become the first father-son duo to play in an NBA contest.</p><p>Bronny missed both of his shot attempts in a brief two-minute stint of action.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>"The plan for Bronny to move between the Lakers and South Bay has always been the plan since day one," Lakers head coach JJ Redick said, according to <a href="https://apnews.com/article/lakers-bronny-reddick-e99fe792df4b26074407c4c8694060db">Joe Reedy of The Associated Press</a>. "Rob (Pelinka) and I have talked about that. The USC product averaged 8.8 points on 35% shooting to go along with 3.5 rebounds and one assist per contest over four appearances in Las Vegas.</p>

<p>Randy Shelton, an ex-Los Angeles Clippers trainer, is suing the team and its president of basketball operations, Lawrence Frank, for wrongful termination, according to court documents obtained by NBA insider <a href="https://x.com/ChrisBHaynes/status/1849549592062525867">Chris Haynes</a>.</p><p>Shelton says he was fired after complaining to the club that <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/4200" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/4200">Kawhi Leonard</a> was being subjected to unsafe treatment for injuries that violated NBA protocols. The <a href="https://x.com/ChrisBHaynes/status/1849549592062525867/photo/4">lawsuit</a> also says that the Clippers' long-term efforts to attract Leonard "leapt well beyond the bounds of the NBA constitution" in terms of violating the league's tampering rules.</p><p>"We hope that our client's lawsuit will serve as a wakeup call to the Clippers organization that their players are not just dollar values, but are humans requiring proper - and not hastened - health and recovery treatment for the careers and lives afterwards," Shelton's attorney told Haynes in a <a href="https://x.com/ChrisBHaynes/status/1849546562554479019">statement.</a></p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Shelton joined the Clippers in July 2019 after working with Leonard at San Diego State, where he was the men's basketball team's strength and conditioning coach. Shelton says his hiring was part of the Clippers' multi-year effort to lure Leonard to his hometown NBA club.</p><p>Clippers assistant general manager Mark Hughes initially reached out to Shelton in 2017 while Leonard was still a member of the San Antonio Spurs to seek private health information about the two-time Finals MVP, according to the <a href="https://x.com/ChrisBHaynes/status/1849550111879332148">lawsuit</a>. </p><p>The Clippers met with Shelton again during the Toronto Raptors' championship run in 2019 to gauge Leonard's willingness to join the franchise.</p><p>Leonard agreed to a three-year, $103-million contract with Los Angeles after leading the Raptors to their first NBA title.</p><p>The lawsuit asserts that the Clippers rushed Leonard back from his 2021 ACL tear. It <a href="https://x.com/ChrisBHaynes/status/1849550283115987137">also</a> states that Leonard showed symptoms of a concussion after being hit in the face during a contest against the New Orleans Pelicans on March 25, 2023. Leonard was allegedly allowed to continue playing without being evaluated by the team's medical staff, which goes against the NBA's protocols for potential concussion victims.</p><p>Leonard then tore his meniscus in the Clippers' 2023 playoff series against the Phoenix Suns. According to the <a href="https://x.com/ChrisBHaynes/status/1849550283115987137/photo/2">suit</a>, Shelton submitted a complaint to Frank in the wake of the injury in which he wrote that the "mishandling of Kawhi Leonard's injury and return-to-play protocol has been mind-blowing" and "the disregard for his recovery process is unacceptable." The organization fired Shelton without cause less than three months later.</p><p>The Clippers disputed Shelton's claims.</p><p>"Mr. Shelton's claims were investigated and found to be without merit. We honored Mr. Shelton's employment contract and paid him in full," the Clippers <a href="https://x.com/ChrisBHaynes/status/1849545974903181773">said</a> in a statement to Haynes. "This lawsuit is a belated attempt to shake down the Clippers based on accusations that Mr. Shelton should know are false."</p><p>Shelton is seeking "significant" but unspecified damages at trial, his attorneys told <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/41984045/ex-clippers-staffer-sues-says-was-fired-kawhi-concerns">ESPN's Baxter Holmes and Ramona Shelburne</a>.</p><p>"We are reviewing the court filings in this matter," an NBA spokesperson <a href="https://x.com/ChrisBHaynes/status/1849839637386371284">told</a> Haynes on Friday regarding the lawsuit.</p>

The All-Star duo shot a combined 10-of-36 from the field - including 0-for-9 from deep - in New York's Game 4 defeat. Stewart missed her first eight shot attempts, as <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///wnba/players/48780" href="https://thescore.com/wnba/players/48780">Napheesa Collier</a> - the reigning Defensive Player of the Year - used her length and athleticism to disrupt the two-time Finals MVP. Minnesota also had success throwing an extra defender on Stewart whenever she caught the ball within the arc, and they were prepared to provide help if the Liberty forward drove to the basket. It was a similar story for Ionescu, who was consistently swarmed in high ball screens and run off the 3-point line.</p><p>Collier, meanwhile, was held to 40% shooting for the second consecutive contest, even though the Lynx lived to fight another day. Stewart's ability to cut off Collier's drives and challenge any shot with her 7-foot-1 wingspan has been crucial in slowing down the WNBA's record holder for points in a single postseason. As for Minnesota guard <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///wnba/players/27221" href="https://thescore.com/wnba/players/27221">Courtney Williams</a>, she was running on fumes. After a strong start to Game 4, fatigue certainly set in, as she managed just two points on 1-of-6 shooting over the final 20 minutes of play and settled for five contested mid-range attempts instead of taking the ball strong to the basket.</p><p>It's unlikely all four players will struggle to the same degree in Game 5. Sandy Brondello has been managing Laney-Hamilton's minutes since her return from injury in late August, but the New York head coach has deployed her for over 31 minutes of action in three straight matchups. Meanwhile, <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///wnba/players/121518" href="https://thescore.com/wnba/players/121518">Leonie Fiebich</a> has been a steady contributor on both ends of the floor since she was inserted into the starting lineup for <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///wnba/players/15298" href="https://thescore.com/wnba/players/15298">Courtney Vandersloot</a> at the beginning of the playoffs. The 6-foot-4 forward is averaging 13 points and shooting a sizzling 50% from downtown across four Finals appearances. Her 115 points during the Liberty's playoff run is the second most by a rookie in WNBA postseason history, trailing only the legendary Maya Moore.</p><p>On the Lynx's side, a number of role players rose to the occasion in Game 4 to keep their season alive. Starting center <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///wnba/players/48110" href="https://thescore.com/wnba/players/48110">Alanna Smith</a> battled through a back injury to provide support for her teammates on the backline and another floor-spacing option. Second-year reserve <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///wnba/players/110178" href="https://thescore.com/wnba/players/110178">Dorka Juhasz</a> got the surprising nod over veteran <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///wnba/players/39692" href="https://thescore.com/wnba/players/39692">Myisha Hines-Allen</a> and did a great job alongside Smith. Juhasz's stats don't jump off the page, but her defensive physicality and willingness to hit the deck to force a tie-up didn't go unnoticed. <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///wnba/players/47616" href="https://thescore.com/wnba/players/47616">Bridget Carleton</a> made a series of timely plays outside of her game-winning free throws. After staying vertical against <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///wnba/players/102688" href="https://thescore.com/wnba/players/102688">Nyara Sabally</a> on a point-blank attempt, Carleton took a charge from the German center with the Liberty threatening to re-take the lead in the third quarter. The extra possessions generated by the Liberty are leading to putbacks for their bigs and opening threes with Minnesota out of position and unable to defend the perimeter. And even when New York isn't capitalizing on its second chances, it's at least taking away possessions from the Lynx and disrupting their offensive flow.</p>

Stewart's 14-point effort in the third quarter was the highest by any player in one frame during this year's playoffs.</p><p>Stewart locked in after a modest first-half showing, registering 22 of the Liberty's 45 points over the final 20 minutes, including 13 straight between the third and fourth quarters. That's the most consecutive team points scored by a single player in WNBA Finals history, per <a href="https://www.espn.com/wnba/story/_/id/41838551/wnba-finals-2024-game-3-new-york-liberty-minnesota-lynx-stewart-ionescu-one-win-away-championship">ESPN Research</a>. Stewart showed confidence pulling up from the mid-range, hit turnaround jumpers in the paint on mismatches, drained a pair of triples, and continuously got to the free-throw line. The two-time Finals MVP's defensive work on <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///wnba/players/48780" href="https://thescore.com/wnba/players/48780">Napheesa Collier</a> was phenomenal, as she was largely responsible for the Lynx star's four turnovers and 9-of-22 shooting performance. Stewart repeatedly stood tall with her 7-foot-1 wingspan and blocked Collier twice.</p><p>"We don't win this game without Stewie," Ionescu told reporters postgame, including <a href="https://apnews.com/article/wnba-finals-lynx-liberty-score-8efdf448485626ac2bbcad2105d286d4">Doug Feinberg of The Associated Press</a>. That (game-winning) shot's nice, but what (Stewart) was able to do for us tonight willed us back into the game."</p><h3>Sabrina's fearlessness</h3><p>It was a relatively pedestrian night for Ionescu until her Game 3 heroics. The three-time All-Star guard had two points on 1-of-4 shooting halfway through Wednesday night's affair, with her first made field goal coming on a floater with six seconds left in the second quarter. She then scored five points in the next frame, including a triple with 1:07 remaining to extend her playoff streak to 23 straight games with at least one 3-point field goal.</p><p>Nobody would've faulted Ionescu if she deferred to Stewart for the last shot, especially with all the work the 6-foot-4 forward had done to get the team back in it. But New York head coach Sandy Brondello showed no hesitation in drawing up a play for Ionescu with the game in the balance. The Oregon product rewarded that faith on the ensuing possession, drilling her patented step-back three over Kayla McBride with one second left in regulation to put the Liberty on the precipice of its maiden WNBA championship.</p><figure class="article-segment--embed"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet">

The Lynx led for only 3:17 through the first two matchups but jumped out to a big lead in Game 3, forcing the Liberty to play catchup for most of the evening.</p><p>Minnesota led by as many as 15 points, yet New York kept itself within striking distance by finishing each quarter strong. The Liberty ended each of the first two frames on a 7-2 scoring run and then closed the third quarter with eight straight points to cut the deficit to one.</p><p>"They punched us in the face in the first quarter, and we continued to wear them down," Stewart told reporters following the contest, per <a href="https://www.asapsports.com/show_interview.php?id=202374">ASAP Sports</a>.</p><p>"We knew that our pace was something that made them tired, and for me, it was just kind of like I was motivated. I was mad. And I liked my matchups that I had and really kind of attacking them to make sure that we could get this back into where we needed to be for it to be a ballgame."</p><p>New York limited Minnesota to six points on 2-of-11 shooting over the last six minutes of the contest. Collier was held scoreless during that span. The Liberty's ability to tighten things down the stretch put them in a position to steal a contest in which they coughed up the ball six more times and were outscored in transition and second-chance points.</p>

Washington Wizards guard Carlton "Bub" Carrington certainly projects to be a player who can successfully adapt his game from college to the NBA.</p><p>In one season at Pitt, Carrington averaged 13.8 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 4.1 assists. While the shooting percentages were slightly low, Carrington demonstrated a good feel in the mid-range and flashed potential from 3-point distance. Despite only hitting 32% of his threes, the 19-year-old averaged two makes per game - something that could improve in the pros with some tweaks to his shot profile.</p><p>Carrington will most likely come off the bench as a combo guard behind veteran playmaker Malcolm Brogdon and Jordan Poole, who still has some promise at just 25 years old. </script></figure><p>After a slight fall during the NBA draft, Buzelis landed with his hometown team, the Chicago Bulls, at the 11th pick. Now the former G League Ignite forward will have the opportunity to produce at home for a squad that could use an injection of youth.</p><p>Buzelis projected to be more of an offensive threat before joining the Ignite but flashed defensive tools in his single season with the program. While Rookie of the Year rarely goes to the first-year player who shows the most defensive skill, Buzelis' versatility along the perimeter and in the paint as a help defender will get him playing time.</p><p>When given the opportunity during Summer League, Buzelis also produced on the offensive side of the ball. He averaged 16.4 points, 4.2 rebounds, two blocks, and two steals in almost 30 minutes of action. The biggest question mark surrounding Castle is his jumper, as he shot only 26.7% from downtown.</p><p>Castle also had his share of minutes initiating the offense. The 6-foot-5 combo guard displayed great court vision and patience when orchestrating the pick-and-roll. Castle often connected with center Donovan Clingan on lobs and could develop similar chemistry with Wembanyama. The Kentucky standout can shoot off the dribble and catch. He's got a quick release and the range to be an effective outside threat from Day 1. Sheppard is more than capable of running the offense as well. The SEC Freshman of the Year finished fourth in the conference in assists (4.5 per game) despite primarily coming off the bench for the Wildcats. He takes good care of the rock, finds open teammates when attacking closeouts, and exercises great patience when orchestrating the pick-and-roll. The Houston Rockets finished in the bottom third in both 3-point percentage and assists last season. Sheppard's flexibility to play either guard position gives Ime Udoka the opportunity to plug him into all sorts of lineup combinations.</p><p>Sheppard's strong defensive play is another possible avenue to immediate playing time. While it's usually not the first thing that comes to mind when you think of a 6-foot-2 guard, those familiar with the college game saw how much havoc he caused on a regular basis. Sheppard has elite defensive instincts, frequently jumping passing lanes, picking the pocket of opposing guards, and even blocking a handful of 3-point attempts. It's fair to question whether or not he'll have the same degree of defensive success at the next level, especially at his stature. Averaging 12.2 rebounds per game last season with Purdue, Edey will help Memphis on the boards as a one-man missed-shot collector - allowing the Grizzlies' other bigs to focus on other areas of the game like boxing out, running in transition, and spacing the floor. His size at the rim should also deter opposing players from driving to the basket.</p><p>Edey's height advantage as one of the tallest players in the NBA will also allow him to get easy buckets around the rim against smaller defenders. A known scorer in college, his potential to be a go-to bucket-getter when the offense breaks down at the end of the shot clock is the ultimate cheat code for Taylor Jenkins and his staff. Plus, an Edey-Morant pick-and-roll has the potential to be one of the most dominant plays in the league this season. The team diagnosed him with a hyperextended left knee at the time.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>George <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3099242" href="https://thescore.com/news/3099242">told</a> reporters following the matchup that he wasn't too concerned about the injury. When opposing defenses run McCain off the 3-point line, he's more than capable of putting the ball on the floor and finishing at the rim.</p><p>McCain had three 30-point performances during his lone collegiate campaign. Chris Finch's squad finished 17th in offensive efficiency, 21st in bench scoring, and 25th in transition points. Minnesota's front office went into the offseason knowing it needed to make some upgrades. The selection of <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/121687" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/121687">Shannon</a> is geared toward that.</p><p>Few players lit up the scoreboard more than Shannon. The Illinois standout placed third in the NCAA's scoring race last season and topped the 30-point mark on seven occasions, including a Big Ten Tournament-record 40 points against Nebraska. Shannon has the speed to blow by players, the ability to pull up off the dribble, and a knack for getting to the charity stripe. His shot-creation skills are a much-needed addition to the second unit.</p><p>Shannon's strong perimeter defense is a seamless fit on a stingy T-Wolves unit. The Arizona product was a career 39.7% 3-point shooter in college, serving as a reliable catch-and-shoot threat. He's a stout defender at 212 pounds with the ability to guard multiple positions. Larsson punishes overly aggressive closeouts, using his frame and athleticism to finish through contact on drives to the basket. He can also handle the rock if needed and create for others out of the pick-and-roll.</p><p>Miami's 21st-ranked offense will certainly benefit from Larsson's array of tools. The Swede teased his potential with an all-around display in the Summer League semifinals, posting 21 points, six assists, four boards, and four steals. The Heat's renowned player development system always seems to maximize its talent. The 6-foot-4 guard did whatever the Huskies asked of him. He was an efficient movement shooter, a dual threat when running the pick-and-roll, and constantly set the tone with his hustle plays. When Spencer probes the paint, he does a great job of reading and reacting to what the defense gives him. His IQ and versatility turned an already potent UConn offense into <a href="https://kenpom.com/index.php?s=RankAdjOE">KenPom</a>'s top-rated unit.</p><p>Spencer's play on the opposite end of the floor was equally impressive. While the 24-year-old is undersized for his position, he makes up for it with his high compete level, elite instincts, and proper positioning. Those skills will certainly serve him well at the next level. But the best way to earn Tom Thibodeau's trust and some early minutes is simply to give it your all on the defensive end.</p><p>McCullar was a three-time semifinalist for the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year award. The Texas native tallied 217 steals over his collegiate career, which ranks 11th all time in the Big 12. He was 11th nationally in defensive box plus-minus (5.3) during the 2022-23 campaign.</p><p>McCullar smothers opposing players at the point of attack, guards one through four, contests shots at the rim as a help defender, and chases his defensive assignments when they're in motion without the ball. The Knicks are loaded on the wing, but teams can never have enough 3-and-D options. <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/46480" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/46480">OG Anunoby</a> has made 50 or fewer appearances in three of his last four seasons. McCullar could easily find himself in action if Anunoby misses time once again.</p>
