"I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health. This is necessary in order for me to prioritize my well-being and work toward lasting recovery.</p><p>"I'm committed to taking the time needed to return in a healthier, stronger, and more focused place, both personally and professionally. I appreciate your understanding and support, and ask for privacy for my family, loved ones, and myself at this time."</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Police said Woods agreed to a breathalyzer test that showed no signs of alcohol in his system after the crash, but he refused a urine test. Authorities also found opioids at the scene, according to an incident report released Tuesday by the Martin County Sheriff's Office. Woods was arrested and released on bail eight hours later. He pleaded <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3512094" href="https://thescore.com/news/3512094">not guilty</a> to the DUI charge on Tuesday.</p><p>The 50-year-old told deputies he was looking at his phone and fiddling with the radio when his Land Rover clipped a truck and rolled onto its side, per the police report. Neither Woods nor the truck driver suffered injuries from the accident.</p><p>The police report also notes that Woods showed signs of impairment at the scene.</p><p>Woods returned to competitive golf in last week's TGL final, marking his first action in over a year. Clearly, that was the time to trade him, but Treliving appeared to have no interest in doing so. Former team president Brendan Shanahan is mostly to blame, as he was reportedly the driving factor behind keeping the Maple Leafs' core together.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Still, Treliving is at fault as well. He could've pushed for change that was so clearly needed. He could've inquired about what was available and brought potential offers to his boss. But there seemed to be none of that, indicating that Treliving didn't have much of a plan.</p><p>He reportedly spoke to the Vegas Golden Knights about a Marner trade in the 2024 offseason, but Vegas rejected his request for Shea Theodore in return. Prior to the 2025 deadline, Treliving attempted to send the winger to the Carolina Hurricanes in a three-way deal that would've brought Mikko Rantanen to Toronto, but Marner vetoed the move.</p><p>As a pending unrestricted free agent, Marner eventually joined the Golden Knights in a sign-and-trade last offseason, netting the Leafs third-liner Nic Roy, whom Treliving ultimately dealt to the Colorado Avalanche for a 2027 first-round pick and a 2026 fifth-round pick. Given the context, each move was fine individually, but the situation never should've reached that point. Its stars were producing. Treliving's marquee offseason additions - Chris Tanev, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, and Anthony Stolarz - were exceeding expectations. And the team was en route to a division title.</p><p>But the club had two significant holes: the need for a sturdy right-shot defenseman to play alongside Morgan Rielly and a defensive-minded third-line center to round out the bottom-six forward group. Treliving became desperate to fill them both.</p><p>The Maple Leafs then sent a 2027 top-10 protected first-round pick and prospect Nikita Grebenkin to the Philadelphia Flyers for forward Scott Laughton and a pair of late-round picks. Laughton proved to only be a fourth-line center and was subsequently traded at this year's deadline for a third-round pick, which becomes a second-rounder if the Los Angeles Kings make the playoffs.</p><p>After acquiring Laughton, Toronto sent prospect Fraser Minten, a 2026 top-five protected first-round pick, and a 2025 fourth-round pick to the Boston Bruins for defenseman Brandon Carlo. The defenseman did fill a need for the Leafs and helped stabilize Rielly's game down the stretch and into the playoffs, but he clearly wasn't enough of a difference-maker to justify the cost. Carlo has struggled in 2025-26, while Minten has enjoyed a solid rookie season as Boston's third-line center. Plus, the Leafs are at risk of giving a premier draft pick to a division rival. They got off to a bad start in October - customary for Toronto - but it should've been apparent that change was necessary after the team failed to turn things around in November.</p><p>The easiest way to shake things up in the NHL is a coaching change. Firing Berube early in the year would've been completely justifiable despite his success the year prior. During the 2024-25 campaign, the Leafs rode an opportunistic offense and elite goaltending, finishing third in the league in PDO. This year, much of that luck ran out. Horrendous possession numbers and sloppy defensive play came back to haunt them.</p><p>The coaching-change bump is very real. Just look at the Columbus Blue Jackets, who are 19-5-5 since replacing Dean Evason with Rick Bowness in January. Again, there's no guarantee Toronto would've turned things around with a new voice, but it couldn't have hurt to try and salvage the season while still possible. Heck, even Vegas had the guts to fire Bruce Cassidy - who led them to a Cup just three seasons ago - with eight games left despite holding a playoff spot. There's a reason the Golden Knights contend annually. They take action. Treliving clearly didn't throughout his tenure.</p>

The organization is grateful for all that Brad has contributed in his nearly three years with the Maple Leafs, and we wish him and his family the very best."</p><p>The Maple Leafs fell to the rival Boston Bruins in Round 1 of the 2024 playoffs in Treliving's first year on the job. <p>The Vegas Golden Knights fired head coach Bruce Cassidy and tabbed John Tortorella as his replacement in a stunning move, the team announced Sunday.</p><p>Cassidy led the Golden Knights to a Stanley Cup title in 2023. He posted a 178-99-43 record across four seasons with the club.</p><p>"We thank Bruce Cassidy for his dedication to our hockey club and community over the past four seasons," general manager Kelly McCrimmon said in a statement. "Under Bruce's leadership, we reached our ultimate goal in 2023 by bringing a Stanley Cup to Vegas. Bruce will forever be remembered with the utmost regard by our organization for what was accomplished here."</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>With eight games left in the regular season, the Golden Knights currently hold a playoff spot but have just one win in their last seven contests. They've largely underwhelmed for most of the season despite boasting a highly talented roster, ranking tied for 23rd in the league in both wins and regulation wins.</p><p>"With the stretch run of the 2025-26 regular season upon us, we believe that a change is necessary for us to return to the level of play that is expected of our club," McCrimmon said. "With John Tortorella, we bring in a Stanley Cup champion as well as one of the most experienced and respected coaches in the NHL. His guidance will be a great asset to our team at the pivotal point in the season we currently face. We look forward to welcoming John to Vegas."</p><p>Tortorella last served as an NHL head coach with the Philadelphia Flyers in 2024-25. He was also an assistant coach for Team USA's gold-medal run at the 2026 Olympics.</p><p>The 67-year-old is a two-time Jack Adams Award winner (2004, 2017) who won a Stanley Cup with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2004. His 770 career wins rank ninth all time.</p>

The Spartans were eliminated in the Frozen Four quarterfinals by Wisconsin on Saturday.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>A 6-foot-3, 210-pound power forward, Martone racked up 98 points in 57 games for the Brampton Steelheads in 2024-25. <p>NHL commissioner Gary Bettman has no plans to change the league's playoff format despite continued complaints from teams, players, and fans.</p><p>"More than comfortable," Bettman told reporters Wednesday, including <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7128497/2026/03/18/nhl-gm-meetings-gary-bettman-playoffs-goalie-interference/">The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun and Michael Russo</a>. "It gives us a sensational first round. Probably the best playoff first round in any sport. We get more games and longer series as a result of the format.</p><p>"And you can always pick at certain situations in any given year and say, 'Well, I'd like it to be different that year.' But if you look at the body of work that our playoffs represent over time, what we have now works extraordinarily well."</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The flaws of the current system are being exposed dramatically in the 2025-26 Western Conference standings. In the NHL's overall standings, the Colorado Avalanche (97 points) rank first, the Dallas Stars (94 points) sit second, and the Minnesota Wild (90 points) are tied for third. However, if the standings hold, one of these teams will be eliminated in Round 1 since all three are in the Central Division.</p><p>In contrast, the Utah Mammoth, fourth in the Central Division with 76 points, would get to go through the significantly weaker Pacific Division. As the top wild-card team in the Western Conference, the Mammoth would be slated to face the Pacific-leading Anaheim Ducks, who have 77 points, in the first round.</p><p>Situations like these have caused many to devalue the importance of the regular season, but Bettman scoffed at the notion.</p><p>"If you look at the races for the playoffs, I think it's virtually impossible to say that the regular season has no meaning," Bettman said. "To the contrary, every game counts."</p><p>From 1998-99 until the NHL realigned to four divisions in 2013-14, the league's playoff format awarded the top three seeds in each conference to division winners, with seeds four through eight filled by the next highest-ranked teams in each conference.</p>

<p>The NHL has softened its punishment on the Ottawa Senators for their role in the voided 2022 trade involving forward <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/513" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/513">Evgenii Dadonov</a>, the league announced Thursday.</p><p>The Senators, who were set to be without their 2026 first-round pick entirely, will now pick 32nd overall in this year's draft, regardless of how they finish the season. They're not eligible to win the draft lottery and can't trade the pick. They're also being fined $1 million CAD.</p><p>The Vegas Golden Knights attempted to trade Dadonov to the Anaheim Ducks at the 2022 deadline. The league initially allowed the move but later voided it after discovering that the Ducks were on Dadonov's 10-team no-trade list.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The Senators were punished for failing to properly inform the Golden Knights about Dadonov's no-trade list when they dealt him to Vegas in the 2021 offseason. The league forced Ottawa to forfeit its first-round pick in either 2024, 2025, or 2026. The team opted to keep the first two selections, taking <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/14997" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/14997">Carter Yakemchuk</a> seventh overall in 2024, and <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/16190" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/16190">Logan Hensler</a> 23rd overall in 2025.</p><p>If the Senators miss the 2026 playoffs, they'll receive the same lottery odds that would've normally been assigned to ensure equal odds for the other non-playoff clubs. There will be a re-draw if Ottawa wins either of the two lottery draws. The team is currently five points back of the final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference.</p><p>The Senators applied to the league for reconsideration of the initial punishment, in part because of the change in team ownership. Current owner Michael Andlauer bought the franchise from the estate of Eugene Melnyk in 2023.</p><p>Pierre Dorion served as the Senators' general manager from 2016-23. He was fired on Nov. 1, 2023 - the same day that the NHL punished Ottawa. Steve Staios has held the position since then.</p>
