Jara, 30, asked for his contract to be terminated prematurely, as the Chilean was signed until June 2016.
"Gonzalo Jara came to us with this request," Christian Heidel, Mainz's sporting director, said. "We respect his personal reasons and we were able to agree a solution with him. We'd like to thank him for his time here and we wish him and his family all the best for the future."
Jara, capable of operating as both a centre-back and a defensive midfielder, is set to join Club Universidad de Chile, whose Copa Libertadores adventure kicks off in just over two weeks. Jara admitted to En Busca del Gol that he had an offer to join Celta de Vigo, but he'd already given his word to Sebastian Beccacece, Universidad's manager.
