Prodigious German winger Serge Gnabry has returned to his homeland in search of first-team football, joining Werder Bremen on a permanent deal from Arsenal for an undisclosed fee.
Bremen announced the move Wednesday, on the heels of Gnabry's stunning display for Germany at the Olympics, where the 21-year-old was joint-top with six goals for the silver medallists.
"The Olympics were a personal highlight for me and I'd like to carry on my development here at Werder," Gnabry said after passing a medical with the club.
He and Bremen director of football Frank Baumann addressed the media Wednesday.
Unlikely to see first-team time at Arsenal, Gnabry made the switch courtesy of a recommendation from two former Bremen standouts, Per Mertesacker and Mesut Ozil.
"Per Mertesacker and Mesut Ozil have only said positive things about the club," he offered. "I'm very happy to be here."
Gnabry moves to Bremen after an unsuccessful loan move with West Brom last season, where he made just a 12-minute substitute's appearance for the Baggies. He will now return to the Bundesliga after leaving hometown Stuttgart in 2011 to join Arsenal.
