Charlton Athletic fans took their protest against the club to a new level, as Sunday's match against Middlesbrough was brought to a halt shortly after kickoff as beach balls rained down on the pitch.

The match official was forced to delay the game in the opening minute as a flurry off beach balls were thrown from the stands as supporters continued their protest against owner Roland Duchatelet and CEO Katrien Meire.

Before the contest, supporters held a mock funeral outside of The Valley to protest Duchatelet and Meire's handling of the team. Since Duchatelet took charge in 2014, supporters have seen the team's promising rise from League One develop into a fight to remain in the Championship as it's slip shows no signs of ending.

Despite Charlton coming away with a 2-0 victory, fans continued to protest after the final whistle as they gathered outside the stadium to further voice their frustrations.

The club occupies one of three relegation places in the table, with eight points separating Charlton from safety ahead of Sunday's game.
