Braves trade Francoeur to Marlins in 3-team deal

With ambitions of reaching the postseason for the first time since 2003, the Miami Marlins acquired veteran outfielder Jeff Francoeur and cash from the Atlanta Braves in a three-team trade Wednesday that also involves the Texas Rangers.

Atlanta will acquire minor-league shortstop Dylan Moore from Texas and minor-league catcher Matt Foley from Miami, while the Rangers will receive international signing slots No. 37, 93, and 97.

Francoeur gives the Marlins some much-needed help in the outfield as they continue to try to cope with the loss of Giancarlo Stanton. The 32-year-old is hitting .249/.290/.381 with seven home runs and 13 doubles in 99 games this season. He's a free agent at the end of the year.

"Once the injury to [Stanton] happened, we felt like we wanted to get a right-handed-hitting outfielder we felt could give us some offensive punch against left-handed pitching, and occasionally spell Ichiro," Marlins president of baseball operations Michael Hill told reporters. "We were successful in acquiring Jeff Francoeur."

The Marlins have been rolling with the outfield trio of Christian Yelich, Marcell Ozuna and Ichiro Suzuki recently. They also claimed Oswaldo Arcia off waivers earlier in the week.

Miami entered Wednesday 1 1/2 games back of the second wild-card spot and eight games back in the division.

Moore was selected in the seventh round by the Rangers in 2015. The 24-year-old is hitting .263/.377/.440 with 14 home runs, 25 doubles, and 40 stolen bases over 118 games in A ball.

Foley was the Marlins' 40th-round pick in 2015. The 22-year-old is hitting .257/.386/.257 with nine hits in 14 games between Rookie ball and Short Season Class A.
