Moncada nears record after 9th straight strikeout

Boston Red Sox rookie Yoan Moncada is swingin' and missin' at a record-setting pace.
After striking out in a pinch-hit appearance Monday for David Ortiz on Monday, Moncada recorded his ninth consecutive plate appearance with a punchout, leaving him just one away from tying the MLB record for a non-pitcher.
Following a much-hyped about big-league debut, Moncada has struggled to live up to his billing, slashing .211/.250/.263 in 19 at-bats. His laboring at the plate has led to the Red Sox opting to bench him down the final stretch of the season.
Former Houston Astros outfielder Rick Ankiel set the record in 2013 when he struck out in 10 straight plate appearances.
