Mets noncommittal about Matz's next start following another ugly outing

Less than a week after Matt Harvey was removed from the New York Mets' rotation, Steven Matz's starting job may be in jeopardy, too.

Following another ugly outing Wednesday from Matz, who allowed seven runs (three earned) over just 3 1/3 innings against the St. Louis Cardinals, Mets manager Mickey Callaway was noncommittal about whether the scuffling left-hander would make his next start.

He stressed, however, that nothing has been decided yet.

"(We) won't make any rash decisions," Callaway told reporters, including MLB.com's Anthony Dicomo.

Through five starts, Matz - limited to just 13 starts in 2017 due to renewed elbow trouble - owns a 4.98 ERA and 1.29 WHIP, having made it through the fifth inning just twice. Since the start of last season, Matz - who finished sixth in National League Rookie of the Year voting in 2016 - had crafted a 5.72 ERA with a 1.45 WHIP over 17 starts heading into Wednesday's outing at Busch Stadium.

Were the Mets to remove the 26-year-old from the rotation, right-hander Robert Gsellman - bumped to the bullpen this year after stumbling through 22 starts last season - would be the likeliest candidate to replace him. Through 11 relief appearances in 2018, Gsellman owns a 2.03 ERA and 1.20 WHIP, notching 19 strikeouts without allowing a home run over 13 1/3 innings.
