Kyle Lohse calls out Diamondbacks: 'They won tough-guy points today'
In a war of words and hit batters, the Milwaukee Brewers had the last laugh Tuesday night. They also had the best quote.
Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy hit a grand slam in the seventh to cap a 7-5 comeback win, one batter after Arizona reliever Evan Marshall beaned Ryan Braun.
Marshall, who was acting in retaliation after Kyle Lohse threw at three Diamondbacks, was ejected for hitting Braun.
"You know what? They won tough-guy points today," Brewers starter Kyle Lohse said. "But I don't know where the stats are for those. We won the game because of that. It was pretty unnecessary."
Lohse may have had the last word, but he also helped escalate the fracas.
On Monday, Gerardo Parra was hit by Brewers pitcher Wily Peralta in the seventh inning. Lohse responded Tuesday by hitting Didi Gregorious and Chris Owings in the sixth and nearly Diamondbacks starter Mike Bolsinger later that inning.
Braun has a history with the Diamondbacks after it was revealed he tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs during the 2011 National League Division Series. Arizona won the series despite a monster performance from the Brewers slugger.
Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson later called Braun a "cheater" and said he would like to have a private conversation with him. After getting plunked Tuesday, Braun was asked if he thought it was payback.
"You'd have to ask him," Braun said in reference to Gibson. "I wish him the best. I hope he finds peace and happiness in his life and is able to enjoy his life. I wish him the best."
