Astros' Springer suffers setback, out 2 more weeks
Save for occasionally stirring the pot by rushing prospects through their minor-league system, the Houston Astros have proven themselves to be a pretty patient franchise.
That patience is being tested by 24-year-old rookie outfielder George Springer. Out with a right quadriceps strain since July 19, Springer's recovery is taking longer than expected, and he's suffered a setback that will delay his return at least another fortnight.
Springer was initially expected to be activated last week, but he tweaked the quad in a rehab game on Aug. 6, and though manager Bo Porter and GM Jeff Luhnow both said the setback was minor, it looks like Springer's timetable will have to be reset.
"It's tough because I'm a competitor and want to go out there and help the team, but I’ve got to get healthy and see what happens," Springer said after receiving the prognosis. "I want to go out there and compete with these guys and be able to help and not be a cheerleader. I want to be able to play, but you’ve got to be smart."
"This type of injury, he should be able to come back from," said Luhnow. "Obviously, we’re going to be very cautious with bringing him back, but we still have plenty of time. I expect he’ll play the month of September here."
In 78 games this season, Springer has slashed .231/.336/.468 with 20 home runs (about one every 15 at-bats). The Astros are 34-44 with him in uniform, and 15-26 without him.
