Red Sox's Breslow doesn't think team will pick up his $4M option

Boston Red Sox reliever Craig Breslow doesn't need his degree in molecular biophysics and biochemistry from Yale to realize he struggled in 2014.

A season after posting a career-low 1.81 ERA in 59 2/3 innings, the southpaw finished 2014 with an ERA of 5.96 in 54 1/3 innings, while allowing left-handers to hit .291/.381/.456.

Boston holds a $4 million team option for next season, a deal that Breslow isn't optimistic that the Red Sox will go for if they focus solely on his most recent body of work.

“If you were to strictly look at 2014 with blinders without what had happened previously and what you might expect to happen going forward, $4 million is probably a hefty price tag,” Breslow told Rob Bradford of WEEI. “But I think if (you) look at the body of work from 2008-13, you can (get) better appreciation for the pitcher that I’€™ve been and the pitcher that I will (be).”
