Paul Molitor introduced as Twins' manager: 'I'm coming here to win'
Paul Molitor was sworn in as the 13th manager in Minnesota Twins history Tuesday and shared his vision for the team moving forward.
Molitor kicked off the press conference by telling members of the media that he will not be buying a round of drinks afterwards, poking fun at new Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon's very laid back introduction Monday.
Molitor then got down to business.
"I'm coming here to win. It's very important to lay that out there from the start," Molitor exclaimed. "We've had four years of struggle. We've had fans who try to find ways to stay optimistic and not get angry."
The Hall of Famer was also very forward about how he intends to turn the franchise around.
"If you watched the postseason, it's pitching, pitching, pitching. So you have to do the right things around that."
General manager Terry Ryan gave Molitor a glowing endorsement, and even revealed he was the better option for the club moving forward over Maddon because of his familiarity with the team and its minor leaguers.
"I enjoyed my give and take with him (Maddon). I'm sure he's going to do a good job down in Chicago," Ryan said. "He's an interesting guy. But ultimately, Paul was our guy."
Ryan also addressed the team's payroll situation heading into free agency, and preached the team would be active in order to fill holes.
Molitor succeeds Ron Gardenhire, who served as the manager in Minnesota for 13 seasons.
