Report: Dodgers to hire Athletics' Farhan Zaidi as GM
Andrew Friedman and the Los Angeles Dodgers have reportedly settled on a new general manager.
The Dodgers will soon name Farhan Zaidi the organization's GM, according to Ken Gurnick of MLB.com.
Gurnick said the announcement is expected to come at some point this week. Zaidi has spent 10 seasons with the Oakland Athletics, most recently serving as the assistant general manager to Billy Beane.
The 37-year-old had previously served as the Athletics' director of baseball operations, and is considered to have a strong analytical mind. Zaidi has an economics degree from MIT and earned a Ph.D. in behavioral economics from UC Berkeley.
"I'm more worried about losing him to Apple or Google than I am to another team," Beane told Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle earlier in the year.
Zaidi had a major role in helping Oakland land Cuban outfielder Yoenis Cespedes, according to Slusser.
Los Angeles will also name former San Diego Padres general manager Josh Byrnes a senior executive, according to Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times. Byrnes was fired by the Padres in June.
Friedman left the Tampa Bay Rays to become the Dodgers' president of baseball operations in October, a move that bumped then-GM Ned Colletti from his post and created an opening. Colletti remains with the organization as an adviser.
