Cardinals, White Sox, Cubs among teams reported to have interest in Andrew Miller
To no one's surprise, left-hander Andrew Miller is reportedly drawing plenty of interest in free agency.
Miller's representatives met with Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak on Tuesday, according to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Both Chicago teams are among what is likely a long list of other organizations interested in the 29-year-old, as well, reported Bruce Levine of CBS Chicago.
Miller morphed into one of the game's most dominant relievers last season after struggling as a starter. Between the Boston Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles, Miller struck out 14.87 batters per nine innings while posting a 2.02 ERA over 73 appearances.
The success Miller had during the regular season continued into the playoffs. Miller allowed one hit on no runs while striking out eight in five postseason appearances. He worked more than one inning in four of those outings.
Miller's career year may have teams viewing the hard-throwing southpaw as a potential closer. Besides David Robertson, who rejected a one-year, $15.3-million qualifying offer from the New York Yankees, Miller is the top free-agent reliever available. He was used as a set-up man this season.
Mark Rodgers, Miller's agent, told Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com his client's progression in 2014 makes him a strong candidate to handle ninth-inning duties.
"I think Andrew's evolution in the bullpen and his numbers this year fortify the belief in baseball that he's a closer-in-waiting - and maybe the time for waiting is over,'' Rodgers said Tuesday.
