Report: Giants could pursue Chase Headley

Brad Penner / USA TODAY Sports

Pablo Sandoval's tenure with the San Francisco Giants appears to be over, and the club is already exploring ways to replace the 28-year-old third baseman.

According to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, the Giants will likely pursue Chase Headley as a potential replacement should Sandoval's widely reported five-year deal with the Boston Red Sox be finalized.

Headley, however, remains the top third baseman available via free agency and is expected to be pursued by numerous teams. The 30-year-old started contract negotiations earlier this month with the New York Yankees, with whom he spent the latter stages of the 2014 campaign and hit .263/.271/.398 with six home runs over 58 games.

The Giants have committed more than $127 million towards next season's payroll, but the club is expected to explore the free-agent market wielding the money saved from reportedly failing to sign Sandoval.
