Report: Yankees chasing reliever Andrew Miller
The New York Yankees are ramping up their efforts to land one of the top relievers on the free agent market.
Buster Olney of ESPN reports that the Yankees are pursuing left-hander Andrew Miller, who is expected to land a four-year deal.
The 29-year-old was negotiating with eight to 10 teams - including serious interest from the Boston Red Sox and the Los Angeles Dodgers - as of last week and his agent stated over the weekend that Miller is close to making a decision.
“I am talking to several teams about Andrew, and it has been fairly widely reported that the Yankees are one of the teams interested,” agent Mark Rodgers told Joel Sherman of the New York Post on Monday. “They are still interested, but I will not elaborate on the talks. There is a natural progression ongoing and we are sorting through the issues.”
Miller would offset the potential loss of former closer and free agent David Robertson, who is said to be seeking a deal similar to the four-year, $50-million contract Jonathan Papelbon received from the Philadelphia Phillies in 2011. Robertson rejected a $15.3-million qualifying offer from the Yankees and will net New York a compensatory draft pick if he signs elsewhere.
Should New York sign Miller, Dellin Betances would likely slide into the closer's role while Miller would work as the set-up man, forming one of the best one-two punches in the majors.
Player (2014) | IP | ERA | WHIP | SO |
---|---|---|---|---|
Miller | 62.1 | 2.02 | 0.80 | 103 |

Miller, who split time between the Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles in 2014, owns a 2.57 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 202 strikeouts in 133 1/3 innings over the past three seasons.
