Following a pair of solid seasons, the Pittsburgh Pirates have brought back left-hander Francisco Liriano on a three-year deal, expected to be worth $39 million, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.
Liriano rejected the Pirates' $15.3-million qualifying offer, but remained the team's top priority after Russell Martin signed with the Toronto Blue Jays.
The signing of the nine-year veteran represents another solid addition to the rotation for general manager Neal Huntington this offseason, after A.J. Burnett agreed to a one-year, $8.5-million deal in November.
Since joining the Pirates in 2012, Liriano owns a 23-18 record and 3.20 ERA, while striking out 338 in 323 1/3 innings. If there is a knock on Liriano, though, it's his inability to log a ton of innings. Over the past two seasons he's averaged 162 and has never thrown more than 170 innings in a season.
Heyman notes that with Liriano signed, the Pirates are now working on bringing back Edinson Volquez as well.
