Braves finalize 1-year deal with Alberto Callaspo
The Atlanta Braves finalized a one-year deal worth a reported $3 million with veteran infielder Alberto Callaspo on Monday, the team announced.
Callaspo spent the last two seasons with the Oakland Athletics and is coming off a miserable 2014 campaign that saw him post career-lows in average (.223) and slugging (.290).
The nine-year veteran could slide in as the Braves' starting second baseman for the time being, but could also be used in a utility role off the bench as he also appeared at first and third base a season ago. Highly-touted prospect Jose Peraza is coming off an exceptional season in Double-A and could compete for the second base job come spring training.
Despite a down year, Callaspo could be a candidate for a bounce-back season, as the infielder posted three solid campaigns prior to 2014. From 2011-2013, he slashed .266/.344/.368 with 26 home runs in 415 games.
