Padres land slugger Justin Upton from Braves in 6-player trade

The San Diego Padres now have a Big Three to fill out spacious Petco Park.

General manager A.J. Preller announced Friday that the club has acquired Justin Upton and minor-league right-hander Aaron Northcraft from the Atlanta Braves, capping a wild 48 hours that saw the Padres deal for a trio of power-hitting outfielders.

The Padres parted ways with considerable minor-league talent to acquire Upton, though, shipping left-hander Max Fried, infielder Dustin Peterson, infielder Jace Peterson and outfielder Mallex Smith to Atlanta.

Upton, who is entering the final year of his contract and will make over $14.7 million in 2015, generated plenty of interest this offseason due to his right-handed power in a market starved for offense from that side.

The 27-year-old is coming off a productive season in Atlanta, hitting .270/.342/.491 with 29 homers and 34 doubles in 154 games. The eight-year veteran produced 33 percent more runs than league average after adjusting for league and park factors, and ranked 11th among National League outfielders with 3.9 WAR.

He now joins an outfield that's heavy on right-handed hitters who occupy corner positions.

The Padres completed a blockbuster trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday that netted them two-time All-Star Matt Kemp, just hours after reportedly triggering a three-team, 11-player deal that secured them 2013 Rookie of the Year Wil Myers from the Tampa Bay Rays. Those are just a few of the moves Preller has made since taking over as general manager less than four months ago.

Matt Kemp OF Dodgers
Wil Myers OF Rays

Brandon Morrow RHP Blue Jays

It remains unclear how Padres skipper Bud Black will write his lineup card, or if Preller has even more tricks up his sleeve. The Padres already have an outfield that includes the left-handed hitting Seth Smith, center-fielder Will Venable, and oft-injured power hitter Carlos Quentin.

Potential arrangements include deploying Myers in center field or even at first base, where he played a pair of games at for the Rays last season.

The Braves have reportedly been steadfast in their desire to move Upton before he hits free agency, similar to their handling of Jason Heyward and his expiring contract.

Atlanta dealt the slick-fielding defender to the St. Louis Cardinals earlier this offseason for a package that included right-handed pitcher Shelby Miller. The Braves then signed free-agent outfielder Nick Markakis to replace Heyward.

Baseball America's JJ Cooper tweeted abbreviated scouting reports on the players headed to the Braves, headlined by recovering Tommy John patient Fried - rated the Padres' third-best prospect entering the 2014 season:
