VIDEO: Blue Jays' Pillar vies for catch of the year with impossible grab at Rogers Centre
Tim Beckham thought he had his second home run of the season. Kevin Pillar thought otherwise.
Though Pillar is hardly a household name, the unheralded outfielder may have made the catch of the year Wednesday night at Rogers Centre.
Pillar's spot on the Toronto Blue Jays' active roster was anything but a foregone conclusion this spring, but the former 32nd-round draft pick has thrived in the absence of injured outfielder Michael Saunders. The 26-year-old raised his batting average to .314 with another two hits Wednesday and has made a number of memorable defensive plays in the outfield through his first nine games of 2015.
"The way he's played this first week and a half, two weeks, just give him the gold glove right now," said teammate Mark Buehrle, who hurled six innings to help the Blue Jays secure a 12-7 victory over Tampa Bay.
Pillar's grab, incidentally, was quite reminiscent of another sensational catch made at Rogers Centre – this one by Rajai Davis, now a member of the Detroit Tigers.
