Boston Red Sox right-hander Brandon Workman has avoided Tommy John surgery - for now.
Workman received a platelet-rich plasma injection for an elbow strain Wednesday after a visit with renowned surgeon Dr. James Andrews.
While Workman could still face the dreaded operation in the future, he saw Andrews for a second opinion and will attempt the rehab route to recover from the injury.
"That is going to take some time to recover from that," Red Sox manager John Farrell told reporters. "There’s no estimate time to return to a throwing program."
Workman, who went 1-10 with a 5.17 ERA in 19 appearances in 2014, is on the team's 15-day disabled list. He made seven appearances during spring training, pitching to a 6.43 ERA with nine strikeouts.
