Rios frustrated with Twins, 'inexperienced' pitcher over broken hand

Alex Rios believes his hand fracture was avoidable.

The veteran Kansas City Royals outfielder thinks he would have dodged a trip to the disabled list had Minnesota Twins Rule 5 pitcher J.R. Graham never been on the mound to begin with.

Graham, a 25-year-old rookie, fractured the fifth metacarpal in Rios's left hand Monday with an errant fastball.

"It's very frustrating when you get inexperienced pitchers coming to the mound and showing a lot of energy, and not being able to control their emotions," Rios told reporters Wednesday. "I think that's a recipe for disaster, when you have guys like that, high-energy guys without being able to control their emotions.

"Then you put them in high-pressure situations, and they just don't know what to do, I guess. Things like this happen."

It appears a frustrated Rios, who inked a one-year, $11-million deal with the Royals in the offseason, is more upset with the Twins organization than Graham himself.

"They have to understand if somebody is ready to be in these kind of situations, or even here," he said.

"You have to understand who is ready to play in the game, to call up, to have in the big leagues. But, like I said, you should be able to control your emotions and to have control of the situation."

Graham, who has allowed three runs and walked three in four appearances, was apologetic for the incident and wished Rios a speedy recovery.

Rios, hitting .321 with a .809 OPS in seven games, is expected to miss at least a month.

The Twins beat Kansas City 3-1 on Wednesday, handing the Royals their first loss of the season.
