Braves' Andrew McKirahan gets 80-game ban for PEDs
Atlanta Braves left-hander Andrew McKirahan has received an 80-game suspension after testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug.
McKirahan tested positive for Ipamorelin, which produces growth hormone in the body. His suspension is effective immediately.
McKirahan released a statement through the Major League Baseball Players' Association:
I am extremely sorry for letting down the Atlanta Braves organization, my coaches, teammates and the Braves fans. I also sincerely apologize to my family, who has helped me reach this point in my career. This is in no way a reflection of my character or morals. I will work hard during my suspension and pray that everyone will find it in their hearts to forgive me. I hope to have the privilege and opportunity to return to the Atlanta Braves later this season, to earn back their trust and to do everything possible to contribute to the success of the organization.
The 25-year-old reportedly apologized to teammates Sunday, informing them he used the illegal substance during spring training, according to Mark Bowman of MLB.com. Bowman notes that McKirahan believes the positive test was triggered by a cream he applied to his arm during spring training.
Some Braves players were visibly upset with him, Bowman said.
"We are disappointed in the decision Andrew made," Braves president of baseball operations John Hart said. "We are disappointed for him and for the ballclub. This was a guy who was beginning to pitch meaningful innings for us. The guys have been grinding. This was not good for the club."
McKirahan was drafted by the Miami Marlins from the Chicago Cubs in the 2014 Rule 5 draft and claimed off waivers by the Braves ahead of the start of the season. He's worked 4 1/3 innings over three appearances with Atlanta this season.
The rookie joins a growing list of players who have been recently popped for taking PEDs.
Pitchers Arodys Vizcaino, Ervin Santana and Jenrry Mejia have all been suspended this month after testing positive for the steroid Stanozolol.
