Braves sign reliever Mitchell Boggs to minor-league deal
The Atlanta Braves added organizational bullpen depth Monday by signing right-hander Mitchell Boggs to a minor-league contract, according to MLB.com's Mark Bowman.
Boggs hasn't pitched since 2013, when he made 14 relief appearances for the St. Louis Cardinals and Colorado Rockies. He struggled to find a job last year after pitching to an unsightly 8.29 ERA for the Chicago White Sox and San Francisco Giants' Triple-A affiliates.
Boggs, who was released this spring by the Boston Red Sox after signing a minor-league deal with the club, performed solidly during the years 2010-12 as a setup man for the Cardinals. His finest season was in 2012, when he authored a 2.21 ERA and 1.05 WHIP over 78 appearances.
The 31-year-old will report to Triple-A Gwinnett on Monday, according to Bowman.
The signing comes hours after news that left-handed reliever Andrew McKirahan was suspended 80 games for violating the league's drug policy.
