Orioles postpone Tuesday's game amid protests; rescheduled game closed to public Wednesday
Violent protests compelled the Baltimore Orioles to postpone Monday's series opener against the Chicago White Sox at Camden Yards, and the ongoing unrest forced the postponement of Tuesday's game, as well.
The Orioles reportedly considered starting Tuesday's game at 4 p.m. ET in order to comply with a newly imposed curfew, but decided instead to postpone the contest after consulting with Major League Baseball as well as state and local officials.
The mayor's office of Baltimore announced that a 10 p.m. curfew will take effect Tuesday night, thereby throwing the Orioles' schedule into disarray. Following Monday's postponement, the club remained slated to host four consecutive evening games at Camden Yards with tentative 7:05 p.m. start times.
After much deliberation, though, the Orioles ultimately opted to reschedule Wednesday's game in Baltimore for 2:05 p.m. Though the game will be played at Camden Yards, the Orioles announced that it will not be open to the public.
The Orioles also announced several other scheduling changes Tuesday afternoon. The club's upcoming weekend series against the Tampa Bay Rays, originally slated to be played in Baltimore, will instead take place at Tropicana Field with the Orioles serving as the home team. The postponed games originally scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, meanwhile, will be played Thursday, May 28 as part of a single-admission doubleheader.
In the hours leading up to the club's second straight postponement, a total of 202 arrests, 144 vehicle fires and 19 structure fires had taken place throughout Baltimore following the funeral of Freddie Gray, according to a CNN report. Gray, 25, died after suffering a severe spinal injury while in police custody, inciting a series of protests for civil rights that devolved into violent riots.
