Dodgers' Grandal hits walk-off home run after making game-saving play at plate
Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Yasmani Grandal couldn't have had a bigger impact on his team's 1-0 extra-innings win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday.
With two-outs in the top of the 13th and runners on the corners, Grandal had a pitch from reliever J.P. Howell get past him. Grandal, however, managed to track the ball down and relayed it to Howell to nail Jordan Pacheco at the plate.
"Just a crazy play," manager Don Mattingly told Earl Bloom of MLB.com.
Grandal, who came into the game as a pinch-hitter in the 10th, followed the defensive play by leading off the bottom half of the 13th inning with a walk-off home run to improve the Dodgers' record to 16-8.
"It feels great to win this game," Grandal said. "The pitching staff did a great job. And A.J. Ellis called a great game. I was just lucky to get into the game, then have that chance."
