Red Sox prospect Moncada to make debut in minor league game Monday
First stop, Greenville. Destination: Fenway.
Yoan Moncada is set to make his much-anticipated professional debut Monday after the Boston Red Sox announced the Cuban prospect will be in the lineup for Class-A Greenville when it begins its seven-game homestand at Fluor Field against Lexington.
Moncada, 19, is expected to occupy second base in the minors, though it's unclear where he'll suit up for the Greenville Drive in his debut. The switch-hitting phenom also has experience at shortstop, third and the outfield.
"Yoan Moncada is one of the most highly-touted prospects in recent memory, so to have him on the Greenville Drive roster is a huge thrill for our organization," Drive general manager Eric Jarinko said Sunday. "Our fans have seen the impressive talent the Red Sox have assembled in Greenville to begin this season, and we can't wait to see him on the field as he begins his professional journey with the Drive."
Moncada, who was officially introduced March 13 after signing a record-breaking contract for an amateur free agent, has spent most of his time as a member of the Red Sox participating in extended spring training games in Fort Myers, Fla.
