Athletics' Mujica lands on DL after fracturing thumb vs. Rays

Oakland Athletics reliever Edward Mujica was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday after suffering a fractured right thumb during Thursday's outing against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Summoned in the bottom of the seventh inning with a 2-0 deficit, Mujica was struck in the right hand by a comebacker off the bat of Bobby Wilson with one out and a runner on third base. Though Mujica was still able to retire Wilson at first after the ball deflected off his hand, the team trainer popped out of the dugout immediately with the 31-year-old in obvious discomfort.

Mujica left the field with his hand wrapped in a towel and was diagnosed with the fracture after the 3-0 loss. He also required stitches, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.

Acquired from the Boston Red Sox on May 9, Mujica had not allowed a run in four appearances with the Athletics, notching four strikeouts while surrendering three hits and one walk in 4 2/3 innings heading into Thursday's game.

The Athletics selected the contract of infielder Andy Parrino from Triple-A Nashville and transferred Tyler Ladendorf to the 60-day DL in a pair of corresponding roster moves.
