Report: Braves' Callaspo rejects trade to Dodgers

Brett Davis / USA TODAY Sports

Alberto Callaspo is staying put with the Atlanta Braves for the time being.

The infielder reportedly rejected a potential trade to the Los Angeles Dodgers that would have seen third baseman Juan Uribe go the other way, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. Several other lesser known players were also part of the deal.

Callaspo has the ability to reject any trade before June 15.

Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez told reporters Monday that the team was in the process of trying to trade Callaspo, who has been a disappointment since agreeing to a one-year, $3-million deal in December. In 37 games, the 32-year-old is hitting .206/.293/.252 with one home run and 10 strikeouts.

Callaspo's motive for staying could have to do with his ability to see more playing time with the Braves. A potential move to the Dodgers could limit his time on the field, lessening his impact in the lineup while simultaneously driving his value down in a contract year.

Atlanta could designate Callaspo for assignment if they wish to part ways with him, though they would be on the hook for the remainder of his salary without receiving anything in return.

The Dodgers' ambitions to move Uribe could come from a need to open up the position for hot-hitting Alex Guerrero. The 28-year-old has been exceptional in his first full season in the majors, hitting .309/.337/.679 with eight home runs and 20 RBIs and is under contract for $21.5 million through the 2017 season.

Uribe has spent the past five seasons in Chavez Ravine but is in the final year of his deal. Coming off a season in which he slashed .311/.337/.440 with nine home runs, the 36-year-old is hitting .247/.287/.309 with just three extra-base hits in 29 games.
