Royals poised to start at 5 positions in latest All-Star voting update
Kansas City Royals fans are imposing their will on this year's All-Star Game, one vote at a time.
MLB released the second ballot update for July's Midsummer Classic on Monday, and the results continue to play favorably for the defending American League champs.
Led by top vote-getter Salvador Perez, four Royals - Mike Moustakas, Alcides Escobar, and Lorenzo Cain - pace their positions with over two million votes each, while a fifth - Alex Gordon - is also in a starting position for the July 14 game in Cincinnati.
The latest update comes in stark contrast to the AL leaderboard for wins above replacement, as well as several other metrics used to evaluate performance.
Detroit Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera is the only player in the AL's top six fWAR leaders to have the most votes at his position, while MLB's hit leaders, Prince Fielder and Jason Kipnis, sit third and fourth in voting at first and second base.
With six more weeks of ballot updates, Royals fans have plenty of time to put an even bigger dent in the voting results. Eric Hosmer trails Cabrera by just over 70,000 votes, while Omar Infante - who ranks 19th in WAR and 20th in wOBA among 22 qualified second baseman - has nearly triple the votes of Kipnis.
Kendrys Morales, meanwhile, is also within striking distance of a starting spot with less than 300,000 fewer votes than DH-leader Nelson Cruz.
