Yankees chase Felix Hernandez after 4 2/3 innings, Pineda stymies former team

Jennifer Buchanan / USA TODAY Sports

Michael Pineda showed Felix Hernandez how it's done.

The New York Yankees' starter, who Hernandez mentored as a rookie in 2011, held the Seattle Mariners to two runs, seven hits, and nine strikeouts over six innings in his first start against his former club.

Despite only playing in his third season in the majors, Pineda seems to have found his groove. Coming into Monday's contest, he strutted his 6-2 record and 3.36 ERA through 10 starts into his old stomping grounds.

What's more is that he's only walked seven batters all season, while striking out 76. He had 59 strikeouts in 76 1/3 innings all of last season.

Meanwhile, the King struggled to sit down Yankees hitters in the 7-2 loss, and he was yanked in the fifth inning two batters after surrendering a grand slam to Mark Teixeira.

The Seattle Mariners' ace gave up seven earned runs and five walks, the first time in his career he's done so.

His seven earned runs matched his total for April, and were one shy of his May total.
