Mets' Harvey shelled for career-high 7 runs, 3 homers against Giants
Matt Harvey knows he has to be better.
The New York Mets starter was lit up again Wednesday, giving up a career-high seven runs and three home runs over six innings to the San Francisco Giants.
Sure, he can use the excuse that he's fresh of Tommy John surgery, but he's not about to find a reason for his struggles.
"It was just a terrible performance. The last couple of starts have been extremely bad," Harvey told reporters after the 8-5 loss. "I just have to be better. There's no excuses to be made.
"It's my job to put up zeroes and I'm not doing that very well."
Despite throwing upwards of 99 mph, Harvey only managed to strike out a mere two batters, the fewest in a game in his career. It's an unfortunate turn of events for Harvey, as he began the month of May on an absolute tear.
In three starts, he gave up three earned runs on two shutouts, while notching 16 strikeouts. Simply put, he was unhittable. But since then, he just hasn't been himself.
Since May 23, no other pitcher in the bigs has given up more home runs than Harvey, surrendering eight in that time.
Much was expected from Harvey, who is two starts removed from his best outing of the year - an eight-inning, 11 strikeout masterpiece. He followed that up with nine punch outs over seven innings in a win over the Arizona Diamondbacks last week.
