Report: Rays likely to trade one of their top relievers
The Tampa Bay Rays have never been short on pitching, and they reportedly plan to deal from that surplus leading up to the non-waiver trade deadline.
General manager Matt Silverman is likely to trade one of his top relievers, even if the team remains in the playoff race, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.
Topkin lists Brad Boxberger, Jake McGee, and Kevin Jepsen as the three arms most likely to be dealt.
The 27-year-old Boxberger was named to his first All-Star Game this season. He owns a 3.18 ERA and 49 strikeouts across 39 2/3 innings. The right-hander has converted 24 of 26 save opportunities and is under team control through the 2019 season.
McGee has been strong since coming off elbow surgery, posting a 1.19 ERA and 0.71 WHIP across 22 2/3 innings while striking out 31. The 28-year-old left-hander is set to get a raise in arbitration from the $3.55 million he's earning this season, making him likely too expensive for the Rays.
Another pitcher with closing experience, Jepsen has made a team-leading 45 appearances this season, authoring a 2.88 ERA and 1.30 WHIP with 33 strikeouts over 40 2/3 innings. The 30-year-old is arbitration eligible for the last time next season after earning $3 million in 2015.
