Hernandez allows career-high 10 runs as Red Sox pound Mariners again

On the three-year anniversary of his perfect game, Felix Hernandez was far from perfect Saturday.

The Seattle Mariners ace was tagged for a career-high 10 earned runs by the Boston Red Sox over 2 1/3 innings, but the damage inflicted on the Mariners was far from over.

Pablo Sandoval, Jackie Bradley Jr., and Alejandro De Aza all went deep off Hernandez, who was denied his MLB-leading 15th victory in what finished as a 22-10 drubbing by the Red Sox.

"There's not a lot you can say," Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon told reporters. "We got our butts kicked. The only silver lining in all of this is today we scored 10 runs. The offense came alive and kept battling. And there were no injuries. You just move on and get ready for the next one."

Pitcher IP H R (ER) SO
Felix Hernandez 2.1 12 10 (10) 2
Danny Farquhar 2.2 3 1 (1) 1
Joe Beimel 0.1 2 4 (2) 0
Rob Rasmussen 0.2 3 4 (4) 0
Tom Wilhelmsen 1 1 0 (0) 0
Jesus Sucre 1 5 3 (3) 0

Hernandez's ERA jumps to 3.65 from 3.11 with the disastrous outing, which is on pace to be his highest mark since 2007 (3.92).

"Embarrassing," Hernandez said. "I couldn't get the ball down. Every pitch I threw, they hit."

The Red Sox, who put up a then-season-high 15 runs Friday on the Mariners, pounded out 22 runs off 26 hits a day later in a game that featured a historic effort from Bradley. The 25-year-old finished 5-for-6 with two home runs, three doubles, and seven RBIs to become the first Red Sox player to have five extra-base hits in a game.

Since Hisashi Iwakuma tossed a no-hitter on Wednesday, the Mariners have allowed 37 runs on 47 hits in two games against the Red Sox, with the 22 runs surrendered Saturday the most in Mariners history.

On this date in 2012, Hernandez tossed the first perfect game in Mariners history with a gem versus the Tampa Bay Rays.
