Dodgers considering Kendrick, Utley at third base
The Los Angeles Dodgers downplayed a potential position controversy Saturday when both manager Dave Roberts and Chase Utley said the re-signing of Howie Kendrick gives the club more flexibility in its infield.
Utley, who returned to the club on a one-year deal earlier this offseason, endorsed the reported agreement the Dodgers and Kendrick struck on Friday, even if it comes at the expense of him securing the starting second base job.
"I have a lot of respect for Howie, the way he goes about his business, having watched him from afar and played with him last year," Utley told reporters at the team's annual FanFest. "I think he'll make us a better team. I'll still have an opportunity to play. That's all I ask for, an opportunity to compete and help the team win."
Acquired from Philadelphia last August, Utley primarily played second base during his 34 games for the Dodgers, making 25 starts at his longtime position while also appearing seldomly at first and third base. His three games at third last season were the first of his career.
"I'm sure I'll get more comfortable taking balls there during spring training," Utley said. "When Dave calls my name, I'll be ready to go."
Roberts said he's excited to have that versatility in his infield, especially given the uncertain health of third baseman Justin Turner, who underwent microfracture surgery on his left knee during the offseason. And despite Kendrick's lack of experience at the hot corner - he's appeared there just once during his 10-year career, and that was back in 2007 - Roberts says the veteran second baseman is already offering his services wherever they're needed.
"He's excited to be back on board," Roberts said. "Howie is open to playing some third, open to some second. The guys are open to moving around. The big thing is that they buy in to whatever is best for the ballclub."
