Report: Buehrle turned down offers in $15M range
Veteran left-hander Mark Buehrle, despite reportedly receiving one-year offers in the $15-million range, has yet to throw this winter as he decides whether to resume his major-league career, according to Jon Heyman of MLB Network.
Sources tell Heyman that Buehrle has suggested he may not even announce his retirement, saying: "He's told folks he entered MLB quietly, and could leave the same," Heyman tweeted Tuesday.
It was reported earlier this winter that Buehrle, who turns 37 next month, would only return for another season if he was able to land a deal with his hometown St. Louis Cardinals. It's unclear whether any of the offers Buehrle's reportedly received have come from the defending NL Central champions.
Selected in the 38th round of the 1998 draft, Buehrle enjoyed another solid season last summer, crafting a 3.81 ERA with a 1.24 WHIP over 32 starts for the Toronto Blue Jays. He struggled mightily during the second half, though, pitching himself off the Blue Jays' postseason roster with a 4.54 second-half ERA, and falling just four outs shy of reaching 200 innings for the 15th consecutive season.
