Report: Atlanta United FC selected as expansion team's name
Major League Soccer's 22nd franchise will reportedly be known as Atlanta United FC.
According to Brian Straus of Sports Illustrated, the expansion team's name will officially be introduced on July 7 along with a logo that is believed to feature a "prominent 'A' and the club's red, yellow/gold and black colors."
The expansion franchise will take the pitch in 2017 in a $1.4-billion, 71,000-seat stadium that includes a retractable roof and is across the street from the Georgia Dome. The Atlanta Falcons will also be a tenant of the ground, as Home Depot co-founder Arthur Blank is the owner of both teams.
Just how the expansion team's name is received remains to be seen. It's worth noting that Minnesota United FC, who will begin playing in MLS in 2018, obviously share a similar name, and a survey that gathered over 10,000 votes revealed that the five most popular names were Terminus, Black Harts, Empire, Resurgents, and Firebirds.
Nonetheless, Terminus Legion, the non-profit dedicated to the promotion and support of soccer in the Southeast that conducted the survey, reacted positively to the reported name.
