Jacare chokes out Mousasi at UFC Fight Night

Jason Silva / USA Today Sports

The UFC held its 33rd event of the year (already!) Friday night in Ledyard, Conn., a Fight Night card headlined by the middleweight bout between Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza and Gegard Mousasi that was originally scheduled for the cancelled UFC 176 event.

The one-month delay didn't seem to phase Jacare at all, as he handled Mousasi fairly handily through nearly three full rounds. With the clock ticking away in the third frame - as a main event, this fight could have gone five rounds - Souza was able to work a guillotine choke after bullying Mousasi up against the cage from the ground.

Mousasi tapped out with just 30 seconds to go in the round, giving Souza (21-3 [1], 4-0 in UFC) his seventh consecutive victory and keeping the BJJ black belt undefeated in the UFC's middleweight division. Impressive yet again, Souza's claim to a middleweight title shot is getting stronger and stronger - his four-fight win streak is the second longest in the organization, second only to middleweight champ Chris Weidman.

Mousasi (35-5-2, 2-2 in UFC) continued his up-and-down tenure in the octagon, and it has to be disappointing for the Dutchman that he was dominated in what could have been a real statement fight for him at 185.

UNDERCARD

Earlier on the card, Joe Lauzon (24-9, 11-6 in UFC) picked up his second consecutive victory with a doctor stoppage over Michael Chiesa (11-2, 3-2 in UFC) in the second round. While normally that's a tough way to go out, it's tough to argue with the gash above Chiesa's right eye when the doctor called it:

Heavyweight stalwart Matt Mitrione (8-3, 8-3 in UFC) also earned his second consecutive victory, stopping Derrick Lewis (11-3 [1], 2-1 in UFC) just 41 seconds into their fight, dropping him with a right hook immediately and pouncing with punches until the referee stopped things.

Also in the heavyweight division, Ben Rothwell (34-9, 4-3 in UFC) handed Alistair Overeem (37-14 [1], 2-3 in UFC) his third loss in four fights with a first-round stoppage.
