Dana White: If Georges St-Pierre returns, he can have immediate title shot

Tom Szczerbowski / US Presswire

In news that should surprise exactly nobody, Georges St-Pierre can have a UFC welterweight title fight whenever he wants.

St-Pierre walked away from the sport in November after taking a controversial split decision victory over Johny Hendricks, his 12th consecutive win and ninth successful defense of the title. Since GSP announced his sabbatical, Hendricks has since won the title. Whether it's Hendricks or someone else with the belt whenever St-Pierre wants to come back, UFC president Dana White says a title shot is waiting.

It would be tough to deny that GSP comes right back and doesn’t fight for the title, you know what I mean? GSP can do whatever he wants. If he wants to come back and fight for the title, or if he wants a fight before that - he can do whatever he wants.

It’s always a huge debate on a guy who’s had a career like GSP – to go out on top and walk away with the belt. That’s a personal decision that a fighter has to make. Being the competitor that GSP is, I can’t see GSP [walking away yet]. But that’s up to him.

St-Pierre's trainer, Firas Zahabi, has indicated that the Canadian fighter plans to begin "light" training in October but has no firm plans for an eventual comeback (see the post below for more). If he decides he'd like to return - no certainty - the UFC will have a substantial main event draw.
