It may have taken him two tries, but Chris Algieri made weight for his upcoming fight against Manny Pacquiao, hours after being deemed too heavy, according to USA TODAY's Martin Rogers.

When he initially took to the stage at the Venetian Macau's CotaiArena, Algieri was .4 pounds over the 144-pound weight limit. Even after stripping naked, the American was still .2 pounds over and was given two hours to make weight.

Forty minutes later, he returned to the arena and weighed in at 143.6 pounds.

"I wanted to be close to the limit, and I would rather eat and feel good than be all sucked up and drained," Algieri said, commenting on why he didn't make weight on the initial try. "But it is strange because I weighed in on the limit on the same set of scales in the hotel. Maybe the scales were affected when they were brought over to the arena."

Pacquiao made weight on the first try, weighing in  at 143.8 pounds.

"It is pretty embarrassing for him," said Freddie Roach, Pacquiao's trainer. "He is supposed to be a health and nutrition expert."
