Jose Aldo did not suffer broken rib, has 'every intention' of fighting at UFC 189

The UFC released a statement Wednesday announcing that featherweight champion Jose Aldo suffered a bone bruise to his rib as well as a cartilage injury and has "every intention of fighting" Conor McGregor at UFC 189.

He did not suffer a broken rib, as has been speculated since he was injured during training. The UFC cites "official medical confirmation" from "several doctors" on Aldo's status

Despite the positive medical prognosis, the UFC does have a backup plan in case Aldo is unable to fight on July 11. Fans will see a title fight, no matter what.

While Aldo has indicated that he will compete in Las Vegas on July 11, UFC has confirmed a contingency plan. No. 1 featherweight contender Chad Mendes will face McGregor for the interim UFC featherweight championship in the event Aldo cannot compete.

UFC remains committed to delivering the featherweight and the welterweight championship fights at UFC 189 during UFC International Fight Week in Las Vegas.

Earlier reports speculated that Aldo could be out until October if he doesn't fight McGregor in July, but this medical clearance should prevent that, barring any setbacks leading up to the fight.

If he does fight, Aldo will need a revised gameplan going in; bruised ribs are notoriously painful, and that's something McGregor will likely take advantage of.
