Report: Celtics targeting Griffin in blockbuster trade
The Boston Celtics are looking to make a major splash this summer.
After adding Al Horford early in free agency, Celtics management has quickly turned their attention to acquiring an All-Star-level player in a trade. One player Boston is targeting is Los Angeles Clippers power forward Blake Griffin, front-office sources tell Sean Deveney of Sporting News.
The Celtics have reportedly been interested in Griffin since last season, and are considering a three-team package that would send Sacramento Kings forward Rudy Gay to Los Angeles. Boston would be forced to give up a number of draft picks in the deal.
While Doc Rivers is reluctant to part with the forward, he may realize his core of Griffin, Chris Paul, and DeAndre Jordan isn't enough to make Los Angeles a contender in a loaded Western Conference. Moving Griffin would likely net the greatest return in a deal, while also giving the Clippers a much-needed shakeup.
In 35 games last season, the 27-year-old averaged 21.4 points, 8.4 rebounds, 4.9 assists, and 0.8 steals on 49.9 percent shooting.
Reports earlier this week suggested the Celtics would likely go after Russell Westbrook as he enters the final year of his contract, but Deveney reports talks between the sides have yet to commence.
