Report: Fisher 'exploring options' for return as player
NBA players have retired from the league and become head coaches before, but we haven't seen someone retire, become a coach, and then return to active competition.
Perhaps Derek Fisher, who was relieved of his duties as coach of the New York Knicks back in February, could be the first to pull it off.
The 41-year-old former point guard recently posted a video of himself on his Facebook account that showed him training on the hardwood with the hashtag "Imnotdoneyet."
Fisher has been "exploring options and expressing interest in playing again," whether that's in the NBA or overseas in China, sources told ESPN's Ian Begley on Wednesday.
The five-time champion was fired by team president Phil Jackson and replaced with Kurt Rambis after the Knicks began the 2015-16 campaign with a 23-31 record. The firing coincided with a 1-9 slump the team was experiencing.
Fisher played 18 seasons in the league after going 24th overall to the Los Angeles Lakers in the 1996 draft, averaging 8.3 points and three assists on 39.9 percent shooting over the course of 1,287 games. While he spent the majority of his career competing in Hollywood, Fisher did have short stints with the Golden State Warriors, Utah Jazz, Oklahoma City Thunder, and Dallas Mavericks.
