Report: Kings' Gay intrigued by potential trade to Heat
It's looking more and more likely that the Sacramento Kings will eventually move forward Rudy Gay, and if that's the case, the 29-year-old has some suggestions for where he'd like to end up.
Competing in South Beach and joining the Miami Heat is a scenario that reportedly appeals to Gay, sources told the Miami Herald's Barry Jackson.
The problem, though, as Jackson points out, is that the Heat don't have the pieces to acquire the 10-year pro in a trade. The fact that he has a player option worth $14.2 million for the 2017-18 campaign is also a red flag for potential trade partners, as Gay could opt out and either leave or demand a lucrative new contract.
It would be a seamless fit should an agreement somehow be made. Miami lost franchise star Dwyane Wade to the Chicago Bulls and veteran Luol Deng to the Los Angeles Lakers, leaving a vacancy at the wing positions for someone like Gay to step in and pair with frontcourt stars Hassan Whiteside and Chris Bosh.
The Connecticut alumnus has discussed his future with the Kings with general manager Vlade Divac, with the lines of communication between the two sides seemingly broken prior to their recent talks.
Gay had mentioned to Sactown Royalty's Blake Ellington that he hasn't paid attention to who Sacramento had acquired over the summer, and how he'd hope management would inform him that they were moving on from their working relationship personally rather than hear it on the internet.
Divac addressed his comments by saying Gay has his number, which eventually led to a meeting to air out any grievances.
Gay, who turns 30 on Aug. 17, signed a three-year, $40-million extension in 2014, and is set to make $13.3 million in 2016-17.
He averaged 17.2 points and 6.5 rebounds on 46.3 percent shooting in 70 appearances last season for the Kings, who won over 30 games (33-49) for the first time since 2008.
