Warriors GM: 'Not going to apologize' for stacked roster
More recent fans might not be aware, but longtime Golden State Warriors diehards remember the not-too-distant past, in which they were a completely dysfunctional franchise.
For that reason, general manager Bob Myers says he won't apologize for the consternation of stars on today's roster. This is just Golden State's time, he argues.
"You remember what we had to watch?" Myers asked reporters Thursday. "... We watched teams come here and destroy our team. We didn’t have any of those players.
"So I’m not going to apologize."
Having won 73 games with a loaded roster last season, the Warriors implausibly added to their arsenal by signing Kevin Durant this summer. Along with the latest superstars came a slew of naysayers.
Commissioner Adam Silver said the league needed to re-examine its current system, while coaching legend Larry Brown said he wasn't comfortable with stars teaming up. Charles Barkley added that Durant was cheating his way to a championship.
But having built his team entirely within the rules, Myers doesn't see any reason why he should feel bad - especially since Warriors fans took their lumps for decades.
"There have been some amazing teams in the NBA in the last 15, 20, 25 years. Everybody gets their turn," Myers said. "Maybe this is our time to see what we can do with a talented group of players.
"Man, we waited. If you’re a fan of this team, you had to be patient. You had to wait."
