Heat's McRoberts questionable for opening night with foot injury
Miami Heat power forward Josh McRoberts has yet to suit up for training camp, and revealed Wednesday that he's still recovering from a broken left foot and complications from rehab.
McRoberts told reporters he suffered the injury during Game 6 of the Eastern Conference semifinals against the Toronto Raptors, but wasn't sure of the severity and played in the Heat's Game 7 loss.
"That's why you didn't really hear about it," he said. "Because the season was over."
McRoberts said the fracture didn't require surgery, but had him in a walking boot for the majority of summer. He ditched the boot in August, but added he's now dealing with the fallout of trying to hasten his rehab.
"Right when I got out of the boot, I came back down to Miami to work out and just try to get back going, and had a stress reaction off of that," he said. "So that's what I'm still getting over now."
The 29-year-old has dealt with various injuries since signing with the Heat two summers ago, missing 109 games and seeing his production nosedive. "I definitely feel like luck hasn't been on my side," he said.
McRoberts is unsure when he'll be ready to return. He's aiming for opening night, but doesn't want to repeat his mistake of rushing back.
"I'm feeling better now," he said. "Just trying to ease back into it. I think I tried to go a little bit too fast last time just to try get back on the court, so this time I'm just being cautious.
"I think that by the regular season, I hope to be ready to go. But hell, who knows, I don't wanna put too much of a time restriction on it, or say this date, and then either be back way before or way after. I don't know."
With Chris Bosh's Heat career likely over due to blood clots, Miami heads into the 2016-17 season with major question marks and a paucity of frontcourt depth.
