McCollum destroys Parsons on Twitter: 'We hit the lottery by not signing you'
Friday's matchup between the Memphis Grizzlies and Portland Trail Blazers wasn't a particularly feisty affair, but things got as heated as 140 characters would allow following the game.
It all started when Grizzlies forward Chandler Parsons took exception to the Trail Blazers' Twitter account mocking his air-balled, 3-point attempt.
Blazers guard C.J. McCollum then took things up a notch by essentially trolling Parsons about his inability to find his game following a second offseason knee surgery in as many years, bragging that Portland was lucky not to sign the 2016 free agent.
Parsons was quick to respond with a reference to his lucrative new contract, though given McCollum signed an even bigger deal last summer, the comeback works better as a shot at Portland.
Parsons is averaging 6.7 points, 1.9 rebounds, and 1.4 assists on 36.5 percent shooting in the first season of a four-year, $94-million contract lavished upon him by Memphis. The 28-year-old is also logging only 18.2 minutes per game as he works his way back to full strength.
McCollum, last season's Most Improved Player, signed a four-year, $106-million extension in July, which kicks in next season.
Following Portland's win Friday over Memphis, the 21-27 Blazers sit a half-game behind the eighth and final Western Conference playoff spot, while the 27-21 Grizzlies sit comfortably in seventh. Portland did take the season series, however (2-1), by virtue of Friday's victory.
The team issued a statement Saturday to ESPN saying the tweet was meant to be "light-hearted and fun."
It certainly did provide entertainment for McCollum's teammates.
