Report: Warriors favored to sign Calderon if bought out by Lakers
The Golden State Warriors have emerged as the favorites to sign Spanish point guard Jose Calderon should he receive a buyout from the Los Angeles Lakers, according to ESPN's Marc Stein.
Following Saturday's 112-95 win over the Brooklyn Nets at Oracle Arena, head coach Steve Kerr told reporters the Warriors would be cutting Briante Weber, and that whoever they add in his place would be a point guard, according to the Mercury News' Anthony Slater.
"We think we have something in place, but it’s not finalized. Got to wait until it’s official," said Kerr.
Weber had been working on a second 10-day contract.
All signs point to the Lakers coming to terms soon on a buyout agreement with the 35-year-old Calderon, sources told Stein, as he's been seldom used in his first season with the franchise.
In just 24 appearances, Calderon is averaging 3.3 points on 41.6 percent shooting, 2.1 assists, and 1.4 rebounds. He last took the floor Feb. 8 in a 19-point road loss to the Detroit Pistons, but it was only for five minutes.
In order to be eligible for the playoffs, Calderon - who is in the final year of a four-year, $29-million contract - would have to sign before March 1.
