Stein: Raptors interested in bringing Vince Carter back in free agency
Toronto Raptor fans enjoyed an exciting playoff run, and the excitement could continue into the offseason for a franchise reportedly flirting with the idea of bringing back one of its all-time greats, at least according to ESPN's Marc Stein:
Word is that the Raptors have been kicking around the idea of making a free-agent play this summer to try to bring Vince Carter "home" by trying to sign the former face of the franchise away from the Mavericks.
Stein does throw some cold water on the idea, noting that Carter is "very happy" in Dallas, and wants to re-sign with the Mavericks, who have mutual interest in bringing the veteran back after his strong series against the Spurs.
Even still, a reunion with the Raptors can't be ruled out. Head coach Dwane Casey showed little confidence in John Salmons in the postseason, and Carter could be brought in to fill his bench role.
The 37-year-old Carter commanded only $9.27 million over three years in his last contract with Dallas, and appears poised to make more than that this time around after playing at a high level in the postseason, including a memorable 28-point performance in 27 minutes in Game 5 against San Antonio.
A return from Carter would note only serve to quell some of the ill will Raptors fans still hold after a messy divorce in 2004, but the Raptors struggled with the Nets' veteran experience in the postseason, and having Carter around would definitely help in that department.
