Mavericks' Carter on free agency: 'I just want to play for teams that compete for a championship'
Even after another productive season, impending free agent Vince Carter is in the twilight of his career and the 37-year-old is still chasing his first NBA title.
"The right situation is what it's all about," Carter told DallasBasketball.com. "At this point in my career I just want to play for teams that compete for a championship. I just want that opportunity."
While Carter has been a part of five teams over his 16-year career, he's never played in the NBA Finals, coming close in 2010 when his Orlando Magic lost to the Boston Celtics in six games in the Eastern Conference Finals.
Finishing sixth in Sixth Man of the Year voting this season is a compliment to the body of work Carter put in this season. In 81 games - he's missed just two over the last two seasons - the former fifth-overall pick averaged 11.9 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.6 assists in 24.4 minutes per game, proving he can be a very valuable veteran piece coming off the bench.
As Dallas hopes to re-sign Carter, the Toronto Raptors are also reported to have interest in a reunion with the former face of the franchise. When asked, Carter downplayed having any knowledge of the Raptors' interest.
"Really? I didn't know that. I think more than anything I'm hoping that a lot of teams that appreciate, at my age, what I bring to the table. My love for the game hasn't changed from when I was a younger guy."
